Who was the lead vocalist of the punk band Television?

The story behind the answer

Tom Verlaine was the lead vocalist of the punk band Television.

Verlaine co-founded Television with Richard Hell in New York in the early 1970s. The group became central to the scene around CBGB, where its extended guitar interplay and literate songs distinguished it from faster, more stripped-down punk acts. Verlaine played guitar and sang lead vocals, while Richard Lloyd provided the other prominent guitar part.

Television’s debut album, Marquee Moon, was released in 1977 and is considered a landmark of early New York punk and art rock. Richard Hell left the group before that album and later co-founded the Voidoids, so he is not the correct vocalist for Television’s best-known recorded lineup. Patti Smith and David Johansen were also major figures in the same downtown scene, but neither fronted Television.
