Rancid released its debut studio album in 1993.
The self-titled album appeared on 10 May 1993 through Epitaph Records. Rancid had formed in Berkeley, California, after the breakup of Operation Ivy, and the new group developed a punk style that drew on British punk, ska, and the East Bay scene’s energetic DIY culture.
The album was recorded with Tim Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Matt Freeman on bass and vocals, and Brett Reed on drums. It established the core lineup and included songs such as “Hyena,” “Whirlwind,” and “Unwritten Rules.”
The record predates the band’s major commercial breakthrough ...And Out Come the Wolves, released in 1995. That later album is often more familiar to listeners, but it was not Rancid’s debut. The self-titled release is also separate from Let’s Go, their 1994 follow-up.
