The first Lollapalooza festival tour took place in 1991.
Singer Perry Farrell created Lollapalooza as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction. The inaugural edition traveled across North America from July to August 1991 and included a deliberately varied lineup featuring alternative rock, punk, metal, rap and performance artists. Siouxsie and the Banshees were among the major acts on that first tour.
The event was different from a conventional single-venue festival because it moved from city to city. Its eclectic format became an important model for large alternative-music festivals in the 1990s. Lollapalooza initially continued as a touring event, but in 2005 it became a primarily Chicago-based festival in Grant Park. The inaugural year is sometimes confused with later editions because the event became an annual brand, but 1991 is the specific year of the first tour.
