Who was the lead singer of the J. Geils Band?
Answer
Peter Wolf
Answer
Peter Wolf
Peter Wolf was the lead singer of the J. Geils Band.
Wolf joined the group in the late 1960s after working as a late-night radio DJ in Boston under the name Peter Wolf. His energetic stage presence and blues-influenced vocals became a defining part of the band’s sound, particularly during its early rhythm-and-blues and rock period.
The J. Geils Band formed in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1967 under guitarist John “J.” Geils. The original lineup blended blues, soul and rock, with Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz on harmonica, Seth Justman on keyboards, Danny Klein on bass and Stephen Jo Bladd on drums. Wolf sang on the band’s best-known recordings, including later hits such as “Love Stinks” and “Centerfold.”
One possible source of confusion is that Magic Dick performed lead blues vocals before Wolf joined, and other members occasionally sang lead. However, Peter Wolf is the band’s standard and canonical answer when a quiz asks for its lead singer. Wolf left the group in 1983 and continued with a solo career.
