Who was the last man to win all four Grand Slam singles titles in one calendar year?

The story behind the answer

Rod Laver was the last man to win all four Grand Slam singles titles in one calendar year.

The Australian completed the feat in 1962, winning the Australian, French, Wimbledon and U.S. championships. He repeated the achievement in 1969, after tennis had entered the Open Era, when major tournaments allowed professional players to compete alongside amateurs. That makes Laver the only man to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam in the Open Era.

The four tournaments are played on different surfaces and demand contrasting skills: hard court in Australia and the United States, clay at Roland-Garros and grass at Wimbledon. Winning all four in the same year therefore requires exceptional adaptability as well as sustained health and form.

Players such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have won all four majors across their careers, but none has matched Laver’s calendar-year sweep since 1969. Djokovic came closest in 2021, winning the first three majors before losing the U.S. Open final.
