Who was the grandson of Genghis Khan?

The story behind the answer

Kublai Khan was a grandson of Genghis Khan.

Kublai was the son of Tolui, Genghis Khan’s youngest son, making him one of the founder’s many grandsons. He was born in 1215 and was about 12 years old when Genghis Khan died in 1227. Kublai later became Great Khan in 1260 after succeeding his brother Möngke, though his victory over his younger brother Ariq Böke led to a lasting division of Mongol imperial power.

Kublai is especially famous for founding China’s Yuan dynasty in 1271. After completing the conquest of the Southern Song in 1279, he became the first non-Han ruler to control all of China proper. He also appears prominently in European accounts, including those associated with the Venetian traveler Marco Polo.

A common mix-up is assuming Kublai was Genghis Khan’s only famous grandson. Other grandsons included Möngke Khan and Hulagu Khan, who ruled major Mongol territories. However, in standard general-knowledge trivia, “the grandson of Genghis Khan” most commonly refers to Kublai Khan.
