Who was the founder of the Wendy's restaurant chain?

The story behind the answer

The founder of the Wendy's restaurant chain was Dave Thomas. He opened the first Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers restaurant on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio.

Thomas named the restaurant after his fourth child, Melinda Lou Thomas, whose nickname was Wendy. The brand became known for square hamburgers, fresh beef, and a made-to-order approach that distinguished it from many competitors. Before founding Wendy's, Thomas had gained restaurant experience working with KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders and helping operate KFC locations.

Wendy's grew from that single Columbus restaurant into an international fast-food chain. Thomas also became one of the company's most recognizable advertising figures, appearing in hundreds of Wendy's commercials from 1989 until his death in 2002. A common mix-up is confusing Wendy Thomas, the daughter whose nickname inspired the brand, with Dave Thomas, the businessman who founded it.
