Under that standard, the euro is identified by EUR, while its numeric code is 978. Banks, payment networks, exchange-rate tables, airline systems, and financial software use the code to identify the currency unambiguously.
EUR is not simply formed from a country code because the euro is a supranational currency used by multiple countries.
