Who was the founder of Cartier?
Answer
Louis-Frantois Cartier
Answer
Louis-Frantois Cartier
The founder of Cartier was Louis-François Cartier. In 1847, the Parisian jeweller took over his teacher Adolphe Picard’s workshop at 29 Rue Montorgueil, establishing the business that would become the Cartier luxury house.
Louis-François laid the foundation, but Cartier’s international fame came through the next generations. His son Alfred joined the business, and Alfred’s sons—Louis, Pierre, and Jacques—expanded the company across Paris, London, and New York. Their work helped turn a family jewellery workshop into one of the world’s most influential maisons.
A common mix-up is Louis Cartier, who was not the founder. Louis was Louis-François’s grandson and played a major role in shaping Cartier’s twentieth-century identity, including the move to 13 Rue de la Paix in Paris in 1899. Cartier remained family-controlled until 1964, long after its 1847 beginnings.
