Who was the first winner of the NHL Lady Byng Memorial Trophy?

The story behind the answer

Frank Nighbor was the first winner of the NHL Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, receiving it for the 1924–25 season.

Nighbor was an Ottawa Senators center known for skilled, clean play. Lady Evelyn Byng, the wife of Canada’s governor general, donated the trophy to honor the NHL player judged to combine sportsmanship and high playing ability. Nighbor won the inaugural award before Frank Boucher later became its most frequent early recipient.

The Lady Byng Trophy is not simply an award for the fewest penalty minutes. Voters consider a player’s conduct and quality of play together. The trophy’s name honors Lady Byng, while its history connects the NHL’s competitive standards with an emphasis on respectful behavior.
