Who was the first to be Governor of Hong Kong?

The story behind the answer

The first Governor of Hong Kong was Sir Henry Pottinger. He held the office from 1843 to 1844, shortly after Hong Kong became a British colony.

Pottinger had previously served as the second Administrator of Hong Kong from 1841 to 1843. The office of governor was established in 1843, making him its inaugural holder.

During his brief governorship, Pottinger established executive and legislative chambers and helped shape the colony’s early administration. He also served as Britain’s representative in negotiations with Qing China.

Sir Henry Arthur Blake was not the first governor. Blake served as Governor of Hong Kong from 1898 to 1903, more than five decades after Pottinger’s appointment.
