Which country contains the city of Marrakech?

The story behind the answer

Marrakech is a city in Morocco.

Founded in 1070 or 1071 by the Almoravid ruler Abu Bakr ibn Umar, Marrakech became one of Morocco’s imperial cities. Its historic center is known for the medina, traditional markets, palaces, mosques, and the large public square of Jemaa el-Fnaa.

The city gave its name to Morocco in several European languages. Marrakech also served as the capital of different Moroccan dynasties, especially during periods of Almoravid, Almohad, and Saadian rule. Its red or ochre buildings have contributed to the nickname “Red City.”

Marrakech is not Morocco’s current political capital; that role belongs to Rabat. Casablanca is the country’s largest city and a major economic center, while Fez is another historic imperial city known for its medieval medina.
