Who was the first player to reach 400 NRL appearances?
Answer
Cameron Smith
Answer
Cameron Smith
Cameron Smith was the first player to reach 400 NRL appearances. The Melbourne Storm hooker achieved the milestone in 2019, becoming the first footballer to play 400 regular-season matches in Australia’s leading professional rugby league competition.
Smith made his first-grade debut for North Queensland in 2002 before joining Melbourne Storm. He spent the rest of his NRL career with Melbourne and became the club’s long-serving captain and primary goal-kicker.
His 400th appearance came against St George Illawarra in June 2019. Smith eventually finished with 430 NRL games, a record at the time of his retirement in 2020.
The NRL appearance record is distinct from records for representative matches or State of Origin games. Darren Lockyer, another Melbourne-era star, also passed 350 NRL matches, but Smith was the first to reach 400.
