Who was the first Overwatch League Most Valuable Player?

The story behind the answer

JJoNak was the first Overwatch League Most Valuable Player.

The Seoul Dynasty player, whose real name is Bang Sung-hyeon, received the award for the inaugural 2018 Overwatch League season. He played the support hero Zenyatta and became known for unusually aggressive damage output while maintaining the responsibilities of a support player.

JJoNak represented the New York Excelsior during the season. The team finished first in the regular-season standings but lost to the Philadelphia Fusion in the stage-four playoffs before reaching the season playoffs. JJoNak was still selected as the league’s regular-season MVP.

The award is separate from the Grand Finals MVP, which recognized the best player in the championship series. Proper capitalization is also worth noting: the player’s esports name is commonly written as “JJoNak,” while his surname is romanized as Bang.
