Who was the first Director-General of the World Trade Organization?

The story behind the answer

Renato Ruggiero was the first Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

The Italian diplomat and politician served as WTO Director-General from 1 May 1995 until 30 April 1999. His term began shortly after the organization formally replaced the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade on 1 January 1995.

Ruggiero had previously served as Italy’s foreign minister and as a senior European diplomat. At the WTO, his role included representing the organization internationally and helping members manage negotiations during the institution’s early years.

The position is sometimes confused with the chair of a ministerial conference or the chair of the General Council. Those officials preside over particular meetings, while the Director-General leads the WTO secretariat and serves as its chief administrative officer.
