The regional organization re-established by the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community in 1999 was the East African Community.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda signed the treaty in Arusha, Tanzania, on 30 November 1999. The treaty entered into force on 7 July 2000, formally reviving a regional organization that had existed from 1967 until its collapse in 1977.
The modern East African Community began with cooperation in areas such as trade, transport, communications, and investment. Its integration process later included a customs union, a common market, and plans for deeper political cooperation.
The EAC is distinct from the Economic Community of West African States, which is based in West Africa, and the Southern African Development Community, which focuses on southern Africa. Its headquarters are in Arusha.
