The famous botanist who traveled with Captain Cook on his first voyage was Joseph Banks.

Banks joined James Cook’s first Pacific voyage aboard HMS Endeavour, which sailed from England in 1768 and returned in 1771. The expedition’s official scientific purpose included observing the 1769 transit of Venus from Tahiti, while also charting and studying the Pacific region.

Banks collected and documented plants in Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. At Botany Bay, he and fellow naturalist Daniel Solander helped assemble one of the earliest major European collections of Australian flora. The bay’s name itself reflects the expedition’s botanical work.

Banks later became president of the Royal Society and a major patron of British science. Several plants, including the Australian genus Banksia, were named in his honour. A common mix-up is confusing Banks with Daniel Solander, the Swedish naturalist who also accompanied Cook and worked closely with him.
