Peggy Guggenheim’s father was Benjamin Guggenheim, the American industrialist who died aboard the Titanic.

Benjamin Guggenheim was a member of the wealthy Guggenheim family, whose fortune was built largely through mining and smelting. He was born in Philadelphia in 1865 and became involved in several business ventures.

In April 1912, he was traveling aboard RMS Titanic during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The ship struck an iceberg and sank on April 15. Benjamin Guggenheim did not survive, while his daughter Peggy was still a child.

Peggy later became a major collector and patron of modern art, but she was not the founder of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. That foundation was established by her uncle Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1937, decades after Benjamin’s death.
