Who was McDonald’s first franchisee?

The story behind the answer

Neil Fox was McDonald’s first franchisee.

Fox opened a McDonald’s restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1953, after obtaining a franchise from Richard and Maurice McDonald. His location helped demonstrate that the brothers’ standardized restaurant system could be reproduced outside their original California operation.

Ray Kroc later became the key figure in McDonald’s expansion, but he was not the company’s first franchisee. Kroc became the brothers’ national franchising agent in 1954 and opened the famous Des Plaines, Illinois, restaurant in 1955.

The distinction matters because McDonald’s history includes several different “firsts”: the brothers’ original restaurant, the first franchise, Kroc’s first restaurant, and the first restaurant under the company that Kroc eventually built. Neil Fox is associated specifically with the first McDonald’s franchise location.
