Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband was the photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz. They married in 1924 after a long relationship that had already connected O'Keeffe with New York's modern-art world.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings through photographs and exhibited them at his gallery, 291, in 1916. He also photographed her extensively, producing hundreds of portraits over the course of their relationship. Their partnership linked painting, photography, gallery practice, and artistic publicity.
The marriage was not a simple professional arrangement. Stieglitz supported O'Keeffe's career, but she also established an independent artistic identity and increasingly spent time in New Mexico. They lived mainly in New York and at Lake George, while O'Keeffe developed a separate southwestern body of work.
Stieglitz died in 1946. O'Keeffe outlived him by four decades and continued painting into old age.
