Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband, the photographer who helped launch her career?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband was photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's charcoal drawings in 1916 after a friend showed them to him. He exhibited her work at his New York gallery, 291, without initially asking her permission, helping introduce her art to the American avant-garde.
O'Keeffe and Stieglitz married in 1924. Their relationship connected her to an influential circle of photographers, painters, writers, and critics, but O'Keeffe developed an independent artistic reputation rather than simply becoming known as Stieglitz's subject or spouse.
Stieglitz also made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe between 1917 and 1937. Their marriage lasted until his death in 1946. O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, where she built the later phase of her career around the region's landscapes and objects.
