Who was Georgia O'Keeffe’s husband, the photographer and art dealer?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe’s husband was Alfred Stieglitz, the influential photographer and art dealer.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe’s abstract charcoal drawings through a friend and exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916. He began corresponding with her, and their professional relationship developed into a personal one. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and studies of her between 1918 and 1937.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz was 23 years older and had already established himself as a major advocate for modern art in the United States. His galleries and publications helped introduce American audiences to European avant-garde artists as well as emerging American artists.
O'Keeffe and Stieglitz maintained separate creative identities. Their relationship is often discussed through his photographs, but O'Keeffe’s paintings and career were not simply products of his influence. Stieglitz died in 1946, while O'Keeffe lived until 1986.
