Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting sold for $44.4 million in 2014, then a record for an artwork by a woman?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million in 2014.

O'Keeffe painted the large white datura flower in 1932. The work belongs to her series of enlarged flower paintings, in which close-up views transform familiar natural forms into expansive modernist compositions.

At a Sotheby's auction in New York on November 20, 2014, the painting sold for $44,405,000. It set an auction record for any artwork by a female artist at that time. The buyer was Walmart heiress Alice Walton, who placed the painting in the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

The title is often shortened to Jimson Weed, but the full title identifies it as White Flower No. 1. It is also important not to confuse the auction record with the painting's original sale history or with later records established by other women artists.
