Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and the photographer who promoted her early career?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and early promoter was the photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings after her friend Anita Pollitzer showed them to him in 1916. He exhibited the drawings at his New York gallery, 291, without O'Keeffe's initial permission. The display helped introduce her work to the American modern-art world.
Stieglitz and O'Keeffe married in 1924. He was already a major figure in photography and gallery work, while she was developing a distinctive artistic identity. Their relationship was both personal and professionally influential, although O'Keeffe's reputation ultimately rested on her own paintings and ideas.
The photographer Edward Steichen was also associated with Stieglitz's artistic circle, which can cause confusion. Steichen was not O'Keeffe's husband. Alfred Stieglitz remained married to O'Keeffe until his death in 1946.
