Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and the photographer who helped promote her work?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a photographer who helped promote her work.

Stieglitz first exhibited O'Keeffe's drawings at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916, before the two had met in person. Their relationship developed afterward, and they married in 1924. Stieglitz was already an influential photographer, publisher, and advocate for modern art in the United States.

He photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and nude studies over several decades. Those photographs became an important part of both artists' public histories, although O'Keeffe later emphasized that she wanted her paintings understood on their own terms.

The couple divided their time between New York and Lake George, in upstate New York. Stieglitz died in 1946, and O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. Their marriage connected her to New York's modernist art network while her own work increasingly centered on flowers, landscapes, bones, and architecture.
