Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and prominent art dealer was Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, gallery owner, publisher, and advocate for modern art. He first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings through a friend in 1916 and exhibited them at his gallery, 291, in New York without her initial permission.
Their professional relationship became personal. Stieglitz and O'Keeffe married in 1924, and he continued to exhibit and promote her work while building his own reputation as a photographer. His galleries helped introduce American audiences to European and American modernism.
The couple spent much of their married life apart geographically, with O'Keeffe increasingly drawn to New Mexico and Stieglitz remaining in New York. Their correspondence and his many photographs of her are important parts of both artists' biographies. Their marriage ended only with Stieglitz's death in 1946.
