Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and major photographic collaborator?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and major photographic collaborator was Alfred Stieglitz.

Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, modern-art promoter, and gallery owner. He first exhibited O'Keeffe's work at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916, before they met in person. Their relationship became both personal and professional.

The couple married in 1924. Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe, including portraits and studies that helped shape the public image surrounding her art. O'Keeffe later objected to interpretations that reduced her abstract paintings to representations of female sexuality, a common critical framework applied to her work.

Stieglitz continued photographing and promoting modern artists while O'Keeffe developed an independent career. He died in 1946, and O'Keeffe eventually moved permanently to New Mexico, where her artistic focus increasingly turned toward the region's landscape and objects.
