Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and longtime photographic collaborator?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and longtime photographic collaborator was Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, publisher, gallery owner, and advocate for modern art. He first exhibited O'Keeffe's abstract drawings at his New York gallery, 291, in 1916, before the two met in person. Their relationship became both romantic and professionally significant.
They married in 1924 and remained together until Stieglitz died in 1946. Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe, including portraits and studies that helped shape public awareness of her. O'Keeffe, in turn, became one of the major artists associated with his promotion of American modernism.
Stieglitz should not be confused with photographers Edward Steichen or Paul Strand, who were also connected to the early twentieth-century New York art world. O'Keeffe later moved permanently to New Mexico, while Stieglitz spent his final years in New York.
