Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and longtime New York gallery dealer?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and longtime New York gallery dealer.
Stieglitz was a pioneering photographer, modern-art promoter, and owner of the influential galleries 291, the Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. He first exhibited O'Keeffe's work in 1916 after receiving drawings from her through the artist and teacher Anita Pollitzer.
O'Keeffe and Stieglitz married in 1924. Their relationship was both personal and professional, and Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe between 1917 and 1937. He also promoted her art, helping introduce her work to a New York audience.
Stieglitz was nearly twenty-four years older than O'Keeffe, and their marriage was not always conventional. They maintained separate homes for long periods, especially after O'Keeffe began spending more time in New Mexico. Stieglitz died in 1946, after which O'Keeffe became increasingly independent from the New York art world he had helped shape.
