Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and influential art-world collaborator?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and influential art-world collaborator was Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz was a pioneering photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art. He first exhibited O'Keeffe's work in 291, his New York gallery, in 1916, before the two had met in person.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe, but their relationship was more than a photographic subject-and-artist pairing: he also helped introduce her work to influential American audiences through his galleries and exhibitions.
Their marriage is sometimes reduced to Stieglitz’s photographs, yet O'Keeffe developed an independent artistic career and made her own major decisions about her work. Stieglitz died in 1946; O'Keeffe later moved permanently to New Mexico, where she developed the Southwestern imagery most associated with her name.
