Who was Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband and fellow artist?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband and fellow artist.

Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, modern-art promoter, and gallery owner. He exhibited O’Keeffe’s work at his New York gallery, 291, after receiving drawings from her friend Anita Pollitzer. Their professional relationship developed into a personal one, and they married in 1924.

Stieglitz photographed O’Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits over many years. Those photographs helped shape her public image, although O’Keeffe later objected to interpretations that reduced her art to biographical or sexual symbolism.

The couple spent time in New York and at Lake George, while O’Keeffe increasingly traveled to New Mexico. Stieglitz died in 1946. O’Keeffe continued her career for decades afterward, eventually becoming famous for her own paintings rather than only through his gallery or photographs.
