Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and fellow art-world figure?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband was photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's charcoal abstractions after a friend showed them to him in 1916. He exhibited her work at his New York gallery, 291, without initially meeting her. Their correspondence developed into a personal relationship, and O'Keeffe moved to New York in 1918.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing more than 300 images of her over several decades. Their marriage connected O'Keeffe to the influential circle of artists, photographers, writers, and collectors around his galleries.
The relationship was important to her career, but O'Keeffe became an independent artist with her own reputation. Stieglitz continued to represent her work, while O'Keeffe eventually spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico. Stieglitz died in 1946, and O'Keeffe later moved permanently to New Mexico.
