Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and an important photographer?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband was Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz was a pioneering American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art who became one of the most important figures in O'Keeffe's career.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract drawings through photographs sent to him by artist Anita Pollitzer. He exhibited her work at his New York gallery in 1916, and O'Keeffe moved to New York in 1918. Their relationship became both personal and professional, with Stieglitz photographing O'Keeffe extensively and presenting her work to the public.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz continued promoting O'Keeffe's art until his death in 1946. Their marriage is sometimes reduced to a simple artist-and-muse story, but O'Keeffe developed an independent artistic identity and increasingly shaped her own career, particularly through her later connection with New Mexico.
