Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and an important early champion of her art?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and an important early champion of her art.

Stieglitz was an American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art. He exhibited O'Keeffe’s work at his 291 gallery in New York beginning in 1916 and photographed her extensively. Their artistic and personal relationship became one of the best-known partnerships in twentieth-century American art.

They married in 1924. Stieglitz continued to show O'Keeffe’s work through his galleries, including the Intimate Gallery and An American Place. His photographs of her became a substantial body of work in their own right.

Stieglitz was not O'Keeffe’s teacher in the conventional art-school sense. She had already studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League before he encountered her drawings. Their relationship shaped the visibility of her career, but O'Keeffe developed her own artistic direction and later spent much of her life working in New Mexico.
