Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a major promoter of her art?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a major promoter of her art.
Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, gallery owner, and editor. He exhibited O'Keeffe's work at his New York gallery, 291, after receiving drawings from her friend Anita Pollitzer. Stieglitz's support helped introduce O'Keeffe to the New York art world and established her as an important modernist artist.
The relationship was also artistically complicated. Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe between 1917 and 1937, while O'Keeffe developed an independent career and visual language. Their marriage lasted from 1924 until Stieglitz's death in 1946.
A common oversimplification is to describe O'Keeffe merely as Stieglitz's discovery. His advocacy mattered, but her abstract drawings, paintings, and later landscapes were the products of her own sustained experimentation. O'Keeffe eventually outlived him by four decades and became one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century.
