Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a major photographer of modern art?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and major photographer of modern art was Alfred Stieglitz. Their relationship connected O'Keeffe with one of the most influential networks in early American modernism.

Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's work through drawings that another artist sent him in 1916. He exhibited her art at his New York gallery, 291, and later at the Intimate Gallery and An American Place. His support helped introduce her work to critics and collectors, although O'Keeffe ultimately established her own artistic reputation.

The couple married in 1924. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits over many years. Their artistic partnership was important, but O'Keeffe also maintained an independent career and increasingly spent time away from New York.

Stieglitz was nearly twenty-four years older than O'Keeffe and had already played a major role in promoting photography as a serious modern art. He died in 1946. O'Keeffe continued painting for decades afterward and became especially associated with New Mexico.
