Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's friend who introduced her drawings to Alfred Stieglitz?

The story behind the answer

Anita Pollitzer introduced Georgia O'Keeffe's drawings to Alfred Stieglitz.

Pollitzer was an artist and activist who had been O'Keeffe's classmate at the University of Virginia. In 1916, Pollitzer visited Alfred Stieglitz's gallery in New York and showed him photographs of O'Keeffe's drawings. Stieglitz responded enthusiastically and exhibited the drawings at his gallery, 291.

This introduction was a turning point because it brought O'Keeffe's work into the center of New York's emerging modern-art network. O'Keeffe was then teaching in Texas and was not yet a nationally known artist. The episode demonstrates how personal artistic networks helped circulate new work before the age of widespread digital reproduction.

Pollitzer should not be confused with Rebecca Strand, who accompanied O'Keeffe on her first visit to New Mexico in 1929. Mabel Dodge Luhan was another important New Mexico connection, but she was not the person who first showed O'Keeffe's drawings to Stieglitz.
