Who was Fleming's father?
Answer
Hugh Fleming
Answer
Hugh Fleming
Alexander Fleming’s father was Hugh Fleming, a farmer from Ayrshire, Scotland.
Fleming was born on 6 August 1881 at Lochfield farm near Darvel. Hugh Fleming was his father from a later marriage to Grace Stirling Morton, whose family lived nearby. Alexander was the third of four children from that marriage.
Hugh died when Alexander was seven, but Fleming’s rural upbringing remained an important part of his early story. He attended local schools before moving to London, where he eventually pursued medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School.
The family connection is sometimes obscured because Fleming later became closely associated with London hospitals and international science. His father was not a physician or university professor; he was a farmer. Fleming’s elder brother Tom was already a doctor and helped encourage Alexander to follow a medical career.
