Who was first chosen to be Nasser's Vice President and was once President?
Answer
Anwar Sadat
Answer
Anwar Sadat
Anwar Sadat was first chosen to be Gamal Abdel Nasser’s Vice President and later became President of Egypt.
Sadat was a fellow member of the Free Officers Movement, whose 1952 revolution overthrew Egypt’s King Farouk and ended the monarchy. He held several important government and political positions before Nasser appointed him Vice President in December 1969, near the end of Nasser’s rule.
When Nasser died suddenly on September 28, 1970, Sadat became acting president. Egypt’s National Assembly nominated him, and voters confirmed him in a referendum on October 15, 1970. He then served as Egypt’s president until his assassination on October 6, 1981.
A common mix-up is Hosni Mubarak, who also became president after serving as vice president—he succeeded Sadat in 1981. Sadat is especially remembered for the 1973 October War, the 1978 Camp David Accords, and the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, for which he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
