Who was C.S. Lewis’s wife?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s wife was Joy Davidman. She was an American writer who later moved to England and became closely associated with Lewis’s life and work.

Lewis and Davidman first married in a civil ceremony in 1956. They later received a Christian marriage ceremony at Oxford’s University Church of St Mary the Virgin in 1957. Their relationship became the subject of Lewis’s memoir A Grief Observed, published in 1961 under a pseudonym.

Davidman was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1960. Lewis helped raise her two sons, Douglas and David. The couple’s story has inspired biographies, stage productions, and films, including Shadowlands, but those adaptations vary in emphasis and should not replace the documented chronology.
