Who was crowned the first Miss World in 1951?
Answer
Kiki Håkansson
Answer
Kiki Håkansson
Kiki Håkansson of Sweden was crowned the first Miss World in 1951.
The inaugural contest took place at London’s Lyceum Ballroom on July 27, 1951. It was organized by Eric Morley and was initially conceived as a one-off event connected with the Festival of Britain. Håkansson, already representing Sweden, won the title at the contest’s conclusion.
The first event differed sharply from the modern Miss World competition. It was originally promoted as a “Festival Bikini Contest,” reflecting the popularity of the newly introduced bikini. Håkansson remains the only Miss World winner crowned while wearing a bikini; the pageant banned bikinis the following year after criticism from religious leaders and conservative groups.
Twenty-seven contestants from seven countries competed, and Sweden’s victory was the nation’s first in the pageant’s history. Håkansson’s win also established the title that would become one of the world’s most prominent international beauty-pageant crowns.
