Who was Bob Marley’s mother?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley’s mother was Cedella Booker.

Booker was born Cedella Malcolm in Jamaica and became known internationally as the mother of Bob Marley. She was a singer, author, and cultural figure in her own right, and she later published memoirs about her son and family life.

Marley was born in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, in 1945. His father was Norval Sinclair Marley, a white Jamaican of English descent, while Booker was a Black Jamaican. Marley’s mixed family background formed part of the biographical context often discussed in accounts of his early life.

Cedella Booker is sometimes confused with Rita Marley, Bob’s wife and a member of the I Threes. Rita was an adult musical collaborator and family member by marriage; Booker was Marley’s mother.
