Who was Apple's chief designer from 1997 to 2019?

Jony Ive was Apple's chief designer from 1997 to 2019. He became senior vice president of industrial design in 1997 and led the team responsible for many of Apple's most important products.

Ive joined Apple in 1992, but his influence grew dramatically after Steve Jobs returned to the company. His first major assignment as design leader was the colorful iMac, introduced in 1998. He later helped shape the iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, and AirPods.

A common mix-up is Steve Jobs, who was central to Apple's product vision but was not the company's chief designer. Ive became Apple's chief design officer in 2015 and left the company in July 2019. He subsequently founded the design collective LoveFrom.
