Its touchscreen interface, visual voicemail, Safari browser, and lack of a physical keyboard distinguished it from many phones of the period. The launch models cost $499 for 4GB and $599 for 8GB, each with a two-year AT&T contract.

A common mix-up is confusing the announcement year with a later international release. European sales began in November 2007, while the iPhone 3G arrived in July 2008. The original model is also retrospectively called the iPhone 2G, although Apple simply called it iPhone at launch.
