Who voices the character Mater in Pixar’s Cars films?

Larry the Cable Guy voices Mater in Pixar’s Cars films.

Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs and becomes Lightning McQueen’s closest friend. His comic personality, exaggerated rural manner, and loyalty provide much of the original film’s humor. The character’s full name is Tow Mater, a pun on “tomater,” reflecting the film’s habit of giving vehicles names connected with their identities or occupations.

Larry the Cable Guy is the stage name of comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney. Pixar cast him because his distinctive delivery suited Mater’s expressive, conversational style. Mater is not presented as unintelligent; although he is often careless or easily distracted, he demonstrates strong mechanical knowledge, courage, and emotional insight.

Mater returned in Cars 2 and Cars 3 and became the lead character of the spin-off short-form series Mater’s Tall Tales. He also appears in Cars-themed games, merchandise, and attractions, making him one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.
