Who voices Gru in the Despicable Me film series?

Steve Carell voices Gru in the Despicable Me film series. He has performed the voice of Felonious Gru since the character’s first appearance in the 2010 film Despicable Me, returning for its sequels and related films.

Gru begins as a calculating supervillain whose plan involves stealing the Moon, but adopting Margo, Edith, and Agnes gradually changes him. Carell’s performance helps balance Gru’s intimidating appearance and criminal reputation with his awkwardness as a father. The character later becomes an agent for the Anti-Villain League and continues to lead the Minions.

Gru’s unusual accent was developed through Carell’s experimentation rather than copied from one precise national accent. Early inspiration included Peter Sellers’s Inspector Clouseau, while Carell tested different voices with his children. In Despicable Me 3, Carell also voices Gru’s twin brother Dru, making the actor responsible for both sides of their sibling rivalry.
