Who voices Eric Cartman on South Park?

The story behind the answer

Trey Parker voices Eric Cartman on South Park. Parker is the show’s co-creator, writer, director, and one of its principal voice actors, and he performs Cartman’s distinctive voice as well as several other characters.

Cartman is one of the series’ four central boys, alongside Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick. Parker also voices Stan, Randy Marsh, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Hankey, Mr. Mackey, and other recurring characters, so the show’s cast list contains many of his roles.

A common mix-up is confusing Cartman’s voice with Matt Stone’s. Stone voices Kyle, Kenny, and Butters, among others. Isaac Hayes voiced Chef, while Adrien Beard has voiced Tolkien Black and other characters. None of those actors is Cartman’s principal voice.

Parker’s Cartman performance is especially recognizable for its nasal, aggressive delivery and exaggerated pronunciation. Cartman’s voice, personality, and frequent misconduct helped make him one of South Park’s defining characters from the series’ 1997 debut onward.
