Who voiced Fred Flintstone in the original series?

Alan Reed voiced Fred Flintstone in the original series of The Flintstones.

Reed performed Fred’s voice throughout the show’s six-season television run, beginning with the series premiere in 1960. His delivery was conversational rather than exaggerated, helping make Fred feel like a recognizable sitcom husband and working man despite the prehistoric setting.

The performance drew on the rhythm and vocal style of live-action sitcoms, especially the domestic comedy associated with The Honeymooners. Fred’s voice, catchphrases, and gruff enthusiasm became central to the character’s identity. Reed also voiced Fred in several related specials and spin-off productions.

There is one small historical wrinkle: Daws Butler voiced Fred in the original short pilot, before the broadcast series settled on Reed. That exception does not change the canonical answer for the original aired series. After Reed died in 1977, Henry Corden took over the role.
