Who submitted Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event?

The story behind the answer

Who submitted Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event? Nate Diaz submitted Conor McGregor at UFC 196.

The welterweight fight took place on March 5, 2016, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Diaz accepted the bout on short notice after McGregor’s originally scheduled opponent, Rafael dos Anjos, withdrew with an injury. McGregor entered as the reigning featherweight champion and was moving up in weight.

McGregor had success early, especially with body punches, but Diaz absorbed the attacks and began landing clean combinations. In the second round, Diaz hurt McGregor, forced him backward, and took his back. He finished the fight with a rear-naked choke, giving McGregor his first UFC loss.

The result was notable because Diaz was not the only fighter McGregor had faced at the time who was associated with a major rivalry. Chad Mendes had fought McGregor at UFC 189, while Dustin Poirier and Khabib Nurmagomedov met him in other bouts. Diaz and McGregor later fought again at UFC 202, with Diaz losing by majority decision.
