Who won the first UFC Superfight Championship at UFC 6?

The story behind the answer

Ken Shamrock won the first UFC Superfight Championship at UFC 6.

At UFC 6, held on July 14, 1995, in Casper, Wyoming, Shamrock faced Dan Severn in a special championship bout called “The Clash of the Titans.” Shamrock won by guillotine choke in 2 minutes and 14 seconds, becoming the inaugural UFC Superfight Champion.

The title had been created to provide a reigning champion for UFC tournament winners to challenge. Its first championship match occurred at UFC 5, where Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie fought to a draw after the time limit expired. Because that bout produced no winner, UFC 6 paired Shamrock with Dan Severn to determine the champion.

This history explains two common mix-ups. Royce Gracie was involved in the first Superfight title match but did not win it, while Severn was the opponent Shamrock defeated to claim the belt. The Superfight Championship later became part of the lineage leading to the UFC Heavyweight Championship when weight classes were introduced.
